BAKERSFIELD — Wrestlers from Lemoore and Hanford high schools failed to place at the California Interscholastic Federation State tournament Saturday at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Athletes from Lemoore who competed were Wayne Joint (113 pounds), Jess Gayton (120), Joe Romero (138), Will Kloster (160) and Jacob Gonsalves (22).
Jude Miranda at 120 pounds was the only Hanford Bullpup to qualify for the tournament.
In day one, Joint defeated his first two opponents before running into Buchanan’s Maximo Renteria. Joint lost his bout against Renteria by pinfall with nine seconds left in the match.
The freshman’s season would end in the consolation rounds with a 5-3 loss to Adrian Chavez of Central High School.
Gayton and Gonsalves both were out of the tournament after going 0-2. Romero went 1-2 and Kloster had the best performance of any Tiger going 4-2 in the tourney. Kloster fell short of placing in the tournament after losing to Daniel Long of Dinuba in a 2-0 decision. Long would eventually place sixth in the tournament.
For Miranda, the Bullpup went 0-2.
Joint (freshman), Gayton (sophomore) and Kloster (sophomore) will return for Lemoore next year. Romero and Gonsalves were the only Tigers’ seniors to qualify for the state tournament.
Miranda - a junior - should return to the mat next season for Hanford.
