August is Child Support Awareness Month. The California Department of Child Support Services (CA DCSS) and the 49 local and regional child support agencies offer programs and services that are low-cost or free and available to any party to a child support order, regardless of participation in public assistance.
In federal fiscal year 2017, California distributed $2.28 billion dollars collected on behalf of children and families. Many of the families receiving child support payments are at or below the federal poverty line, if it weren’t for the collection and disbursement of child support payments most of those would be in dire financial straits.
California implements progressive programs in its child support system that include a variety of payment options for parents, aid in establishing legal parentage of a child, assistance with past-due balances and assistance with modifying child support orders to improve parents’ ability to contribute to their child’s financial support.
Many parents are overwhelmed by the complexities of raising a child, striving hard to be the “perfect” parent. CA DCSS reminds parents that they don’t need perfect, they just need you, and we can help. CA DCSS is here to assist both parents and guardians to reduce the stress and uncertainty of navigating the child support establishment, collection, or payment process.
