July 7, 1932 – July 10, 2018
Today we remember our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Brazil, with love and gratitude. Mary, a resident of Hanford for the past 17 years, died peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness at the age of 86. Mary was raised in Inglewood, California, until she moved to the San Joaquin Valley in 1950. Working as a dental assistant in Visalia, she met a handsome young man named Allen Brazil. They were married in 1952 and moved to Lindsay, California, where they lived for the next 45 years. Allen, along with his father and cousin, opened California Apparel, a family clothing store. Together Allen and Mary raised their family of ten children.
Mary's primary focus and passion were her children. She was a tremendous role model, teaching her children to live lives of love, kindness, respect, compassion, charity, and humor. She encouraged us to love and cherish each other, and instilled the gift of faith in all of us. We have her to thank for our strong family bond today. Mary loved family traditions, including vacations to her beloved Morro Bay, the delicious Brazil (onion) dip, traditional Thanksgiving family dinners, lining up in birth order on the stairs Christmas morning before we could open presents, along with many other Brazil traditions.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lindsay. She taught catechism, was active in the local 4-H program, and involved in various school activities of her children. At the age of 52, Mary decided she was ready to go back to work as a unit clerk at Sierra View District Hospital in Porterville. She enjoyed the new challenge and made many new friends over the next 23 years. Moving to Hanford in 2001, she was actively involved in the Hanford Garden Club, as well as a frequent helper at her son's floral business, Ramblin' Rose Florist. She enjoyed traveling to Europe, Hawaii, and lots of visits to her children and grandchildren.
Mary leaves behind seven surviving children: Valerie (Chris) of Reno, Nevada; Kathleen Rzeplinski of Mendocino, California; Karen Bryson of Reno, Nevada; Chris Brazil (John) of Hanford, California; Michael Brazil (Naoko) of Seoul, South Korea; Paula Landers (Herman) of Exeter, California; and Amy Brazil Taylor (Chuck) of Reno, Nevada. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren: Zachary, Travis, Michelle, Kaitlin, Julie, Emily, Isaac, Christina, Chase, Reese, and her great-grandsons, Eli and Miles. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Brazil, and her children Leanne, Melissa, and Greg Brazil.
There are many lives that our beloved mother touched in a positive way. She will be remembered for her love and devotion to her faith, family, friends, and her joyful outlook on life.
Mary was helped gently through her last months by the compassionate caregivers of Amdal In-Home Care, Hanford Post Acute Care, and Jennifer at Optimal Hospice. The Brazil family thanks all the caregivers who helped make her last months dignified, peaceful, and pain-free. Thank you to Theresa Robinson of People's Funeral Chapel for her kindness and guidance.
