Maria do Céu Mendonça was born to Antonio and Emilia Sebastiao in the small community of Biscoitos on the island of Sao Jorge, Azores on November 27, 1937. Maria passed away on May 8, 2019 at the age of 81 years. Maria do Céu was the fourth child of four children. Maria was survived by her brother Joao Sebastiao. Her late brothers were Antonio Sebastiao and Simao Sebastiao. As a child and young adult, Maria was involved in church activities, playing piano and singing in the church choir.

At the age of 24, Maria married Eduardo Mendonça from Sao Jorge. The couple moved to Edmonton Alberta Canada and had four children, Antonio, Emilia, Eduardo and Luisa. In 1982, the family moved to Hanford, CA. Maria worked tirelessly as a homemaker, taking care of her family and home. Maria never stopped playing the piano and would often play at home for family and friends. Maria do Céu was known for her beautiful smile. Everyone that knew her, loved her.

Maria do Céu will be greatly missed by her children Antonio Mendonça of Edmonton, Canada, Emilia Mendonça -Sanchez of Fresno, Eduardo Mendonça of Clovis and Luisa Vinn of Nipomo, CA; Grandchildren, Steven Mendonça , Leah Mendonça , Christopher Mendonça , Christopher Sanchez, Andrew Sanchez, Samantha Sanchez, Lucas Mendonça , Simon Mendonça , Jonathan Vinn, and great-grandchild EJ Sanchez.

On May 20, 2019 at 10:00am at St. Brigid Church in Hanford, CA, a Recitation of the Rosary will be held, followed by a funeral mass. Burial services will follow immediately at Calvary Cemetery in Hanford. All family and friends are invited to a reception following the burial. Reception will be held at St. Brigid Youth Hall located at 319 N Harris, Hanford, a few blocks from the church.
