Manuel Delbert Mello

Manuel Delbert Mello passed away on February 18, 2018 in Selma, California. He was 96 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Antone Leal Mello and Georgiana Garcia Serpa Mello, his first wife, Barbara Leippe Mello, and by four siblings, Rose Mary Mello Perry and her husband, Ed Perry, Antone Mello and his ex-wife, Grace Santos Mello, Joseph Bernard Mello, and Mary Mello Whalen.
He is survived by his second wife, Emma Mello of Selma, California, a brother, Frank Mello and his wife, Retha of Watsonville, a sister-in-law, Julia Lopes Mello of Gilroy and brother-in-law, Harold Whalen of Watsonville.
He is also survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and two step children and numerous nieces and nephews.
Surviving children and their spouses are: Kathleen Mello Eppley and her husband, Mike of Charlotte, North Carolina, Arlene Mello Rodriguez Ortiz and her husband, John Ortiz of Easton, California, Marlene Mello Frank and her husband William of Madera, California and Delbert Mello and his wife, Carolyn Lindsey Mello of Laton, California.
Surviving grandchildren and their spouses are Kristi Mello Adams and her husband, Alfie Adams of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Darren Mello and his wife, Michelle Maciel Mello of Laton, Ian Rodriguez and his wife, Jennifer of Hughson, California, Noel Rodriguez and her husband, Patrick Bartlett of Oakland, California, Charles ‘Chip' Frank of Madera, Dustin Mello and his wife Misty of Laton, Tessa Mello Echiveste and her husband Juan Echiveste of Laton, Matthew Frank and his wife, Suellen Dos Santos Frank of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Kalyn Mello of Clovis, California and Landin Mello of Clovis, California.
Surviving great grandchildren are Hunter Adams and Midori Adams of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Nicholas Mello, Nevaeh Mello, Kai Delfin, Melody Delfin, Elijah Echiveste and Johnny Echiveste of Laton; Jesse, James and John Rodriguez of Hughson, Conner Bartlett of Oakland, California and Samantha Dos Santos Frank and George Dos Santos Frank of Ardmore, Oklahoma
Surviving step children are Eddie Short of Selma, California and Debra Schinke of Arizona.
Mr. Mello was born February 4, 1922 at home near Lanare, Fresno County, California. He attended Bender Grammar School until the family moved to Riverdale where he attended Riverdale Grammar School. The family moved to Laton where he attended Grant Grammar School and went on to graduate from Laton High School. In addition to playing football in high school, he played the clarinet in the band, which played twice at the World's Fair at Treasure Island in San Francisco.
After high school, he worked on the family farm and dairy in Laton and Lanare. While visiting his parents, who had moved to Watsonville, he met Barbara Leippe. They were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watsonville on February 24, 1946. They made their home and raised their four children in Laton. After their divorce, Mr. Mello married Emma L. Graves Short in May 1974. They made their home in Selma, California.
In addition to being a farmer and dairyman, Mr. Mello was a diesel mechanic. As a diesel mechanic, he worked for Leonard Wills Trucking in Lemoore, Britz Fertilizer in Five Points and several companies in Fresno before he retired. While working for Maul and Polisterni in Fresno in the early 1960's, he helped level part of the land which is now the Fresno Yosemite International Airport and the area south of the airport. He also worked for Murray Gin Company in Fresno and Flores & Perry Land Leveling of Hanford, California.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Farewell - Page Funeral Home, Selma, California. Visitation will be the funeral home from 4PM to 7PM on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Rosary will be at the funeral home at 5PM on February 28, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10AM on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Laton, California. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Laton California.
