LaVerne Theresa Coelho
August 24, 1927 – November 27, 2018
LaVerne Theresa Coelho, 91 of Riverdale and Pismo Beach died peacefully on Tuesday in Fresno. She was born in Hanford, CA to Manuel J. and Mary (King) Lopes. LaVerne graduated from St Rose-McCarthy Catholic School and Hanford High School in 1945. She worked at a local bank prior to her marriage to Frank Coelho of Riverdale and in 1950 began her life's vocation as a farmer's wife. Together they raised seven children: LaVerne (Stephen) Macchio of Scottsdale, AZ; Frank (Frances) Coelho, Jr of Lemoore; Terri (Gilbert) Castillo of Fresno; Patricia (Michael) Cox of Visalia; John (Diane) Coelho of Lemoore; Edward (Susan) Coelho of Lemoore; and Vincent (Andrea) Coelho of El Centro.
Frank and LaVerne enjoyed time traveling and celebrating milestones and holiday gatherings with their ever-growing family. Following his death in 1996 she moved to their beloved coast home in Pismo Beach where she lived a full and independent life until just recently. Her family will fondly miss her delicious clam fries, the gatherings she hosted during the 4th of July and St Anthony Celebration, and the many rounds of Shanghai and Rummikub we enjoyed with her until the end. She possessed a gracious, optimistic and resilient attitude and her faith gave her strength in dealing with things she could not change. Many were blessed to have learned valuable life lessons by her example and her radiant smile was a constant reminder of her genuine love for others.
Her family is grateful for the care and support she received from Lucia Toste, the volunteers at SLO Meals on Wheels, and most recently, the doctors and staff of The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens, St Agnes Hospital and St. Agnes Hospice.
Laverne was preceded in death by Frank, her husband of 45 years, grand-daughter, Jessica Coelho, and siblings Emily Fagundes and Alvin Lopes of Hanford and Eddie Lopes of Fresno. In addition to her children, she is survived by 26 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins from the Sacramento area, and in-laws Mrs. Velma Coelho of Riverdale, Mrs. Olivia Coelho of Hanford, Mrs. Gloria Lopes of Fresno and Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Audrey) Warmerdam of Hanford.
