JoAnn M. Avila
January 17, 1933-February 4, 2018
JoAnn M. Avila of Hanford was welcomed into Heaven on February 4, 2018 at the age of 85. JoAnn was born and lived her entire life in Hanford, California. In 1954, she married her soulmate, Tommy R. Avila and the newlyweds made their home on a ranch in Hanford. Their love blossomed into a family of four when they were blessed with two daughters, Patricia and Cynthia in 1955 and 1959, respectively. The Avila family had a farming business and their hobbies included raising cattle, sheep, a donkey, buffalo, dogs and cats; grew grapes, oranges, figs, peaches, plums, beans, tomatoes, and kale in their garden and proudly shared with family and friends. JoAnn loved the bird aviary Tommy built special for her as well as the fish pond he designed and constructed for their enjoyment together. The hummingbird feeder outside the kitchen window was always full and JoAnn delighted in watching the hummingbirds. JoAnn was fond of all animals, especially the family dogs and cats. Her furry grandchildren and furry great-grandchildren all received “Happy Birthday” phone calls in addition to birthday and Christmas presents.
JoAnn was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith, attending church every weekend and praying the rosary on a daily basis. She loved traveling to the coast and was very proud of her Portuguese heritage. JoAnn was meticulous in everything she did, taking pride in her clean and very well-organized home. She loved her family unconditionally and cherished spending time with them. JoAnn was a generous soul and never hesitated to open up her home to family and friends. She enjoyed cooking meals for large family dinners and was most famous for her homemade tapioca pudding, Portuguese beans, and pork ribs.
JoAnn is preceded in death by her husband, Tommy R. Avila, parents Joaquin and Izabel Moules, brother Joe Moules, sister Evelyn Brown, and son-in-law Stanley A. Rose. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Joe) Duarte and Cynthia (Rodney) Rose-Gagne; five grandchildren, Anthony Duarte, Matthew (Shyanne) Duarte, James Rose, Julie (John) Rose-Gonsalves and Jason Rose; and three great-granddaughters, Delaney Duarte, Mackenzie Rose, and Ronnie Duarte. She will be immensely missed by all, including her fur babies, Betsy, BreAnn, and CheyAnn.
