Donald John “Swede” Hanson peacefully passed away at his home in El Dorado Hills, CA on September 14 , 2018. He was surrounded by his family and beloved pets. Don, the son of the late Hilma and Edwin Hanson, was born November 13, 1925 in Kingsburg, CA. He was a graduate of Selma High School, class of 1943.

Along with his three brothers, Gordon, Clifford, and Lyle, Don was a veteran of World War II. Upon graduation in 1943, he joined the Navy. As a Seaman First Class, he completed a tour of duty in the Pacific as Aircrewman on PBY B-24 Navy Liberator search plane out of Tinian Island. He was a bow gunner attached to Patrol Bombing Squadron 102. Additionally, he went on the shakedown cruise of the Aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1946, Don received an honorable discharge as Aviation Machinist's Mate, Third Class.

On September 4, 1954, Don married Shirley Herren Hanson in Tahoe City, CA and raised their family in Selma. Don and Shirley celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just months before Shirley passed away on November 3, 2014. Don was a Sun-Maid Raisin farmer and Teamster truck driver. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Selma, a 60 year member of the Selma American Legion and proud member of E Clampus Vitus. He and Shirley were active members in many clubs and groups including a Ford Model A group, and RV club. They enjoyed traveling the world together in retirement.

His beautiful life will forever be remembered by his children: son Dale Sharp of Bangkok, Thailand, daughter Diane M. Hanson and son David Donald Hanson of El Dorado Hills, CA; grandchildren Michelle Steele of Folsom, CA, Anders Hanson, Leif Hanson of Fresno, CA, and Landon Woodwick of Honolulu, HI; great granddaughter Anneliese Steele of Folsom, CA; son-in-law Kevin Woodwick of El Dorado Hills, CA; daughter- in- law Bee Sharp of Bangkok, Thailand; brother Lyle Hanson of Seymour, TN; devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A service for Don will be held on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 10 am at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA, where he and his beloved Shirley will be interred.
