Celia Calaguas Verzosa

November 10, 1933-May 4, 2019

Celia Calaguas Verzosa of Fresno, and formerly a longtime resident of Lemoore, passed away Saturday May 4, 2019 at the age of 85 years.

Celia was born on November 10, 1933 in Dagupan City, Philippines, to Demetrio Calaguas and Milagros Fenoy Calaguas. Celia was the oldest child and had six younger siblings. Both of Celia's parents passed away when she was young. Fortunately, Celia was blessed and loved by a supportive and “tight-knit” family. She was raised by her Aunt Emma Fenoy (aka “Tita Em”) and grew up with cousins from the Fenoy and Lejano families. During this early time in her life Celia excelled. Celia had a love for school, reading, playing the piano and watching movies with her cousins. She eventually graduated from high school and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce from Orient College, Luzon, Philippines in 1953. Soon after, Celia was hired by St. Therese Catholic Academy in Dagupan City wherein she was responsible for maintaining the school's accounts and records; working there from 1954 to 1962.It was during this time that Celia met a young and quite flirtatious sailor in the U.S. Navy named Aniceto “Tito” Verzosa. They started dating and eventually were married in May 1962. Tito & Celia made their first home in Taiwan where Tito was stationed as part of the United States Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG).

Eventually, Celia and Tito settled in Lemoore, California where they raised their children Dennis and Veronica. Even though Tito was the one who “wore” the uniform of the United States Navy, Celia “carried her weight” as a U.S. Civil Service employee in support of America's military for more than twenty years. Celia enjoyed her career. She always spoke fondly of her time assigned to the Commander Light Attack Wing Pacific Fleet (COMLATWINGPAC) wherein she worked as the secretary to the maintenance officer responsible for keeping U.S. Navy fighter jets “air worthy”. Celia last worked at Navy Campus, as an administrative assistant, where she delighted in helping young sailors and marines further their education from earning their GED up to obtaining a Master's Degree. Celia retired in 1999.
