New WHCL academy helps ease transition for students with disabilities

LEMOORE — West Hills College Lemoore is starting a program this summer to help smooth the transition from high school to college for students with disabilities.

The free program, Access Learn Progress Succeed (ALPS), will run from July 25-Aug. 4 at WHCL and will teach students essential skills for college success like time management, how to advocate and how to use assistive technology that best meets their needs.

There are only 20 spots available and the deadline to register is June 30. Lunch will be provided.

“Often students have to navigate the college environment in addition to finding services that will benefit them and help them reach degree completion and this is sometimes difficult for this population,” said Associate Dean of Categorical Programs Lataria Hall. “ALPS will increase access to college, reduce barriers once they get here, create a successful transition plan and increase their opportunity to succeed while being a student.”

To reserve a spot, contact Maria Gonzalez at 925-3244 or mariadelaluzgonzalez@whccd.edu.
