HANFORD — A Hanford man was arrested Thursday after threatening his family and officers with a knife, police officials said.

Around 4:30 p.m., Hanford Police officers said they responded to an apartment in the 700 block of South 11th Avenue for a report of a man who was threatening his family with a knife.

Police said the caller indicated that 30-year-old Aaron Sanchez was inside the apartment armed with a knife and was reported to have threatened the caller and small children with the knife and was refusing to let them leave the apartment.

Officers arrived at the apartment a short time later and knocked on the door, but did not get an answer from anyone inside, officials said.

Afraid that the children and caller were being held against their will, officers went through the unlocked door of the apartment. Police said Sanchez, who was armed with an approximately 8-inch knife, confronted officers.

Officials said Sanchez charged at officers while armed with the knife, prompting them to deploy a Taser. They said officers were successful in their attempt to stop his charge with the Taser, but were unable to take Sanchez into custody.

Authorities said Sanchez fled to a back room near where the caller and small children were hiding. Police said the victims were rescued from a bedroom and Sanchez was again contacted by officers.

Officers gave Sanchez orders to surrender, but officials said he refused.

Sanchez then moved toward officers, grabbing one. Police said this officer fired one round from his duty weapon in fear that Sanchez was trying to stab him.

When this happened, officials said Sanchez, who was not injured in the shooting, immediately gave up. Police said no one was injured in the altercation.

Authorities said Sanchez was arrested and booked on suspicion of several felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, exhibiting a deadly weapon and child cruelty.

The officer who fired the shot was placed on paid administrative leave as part of department protocol while the incident is being investigated.
