One person is dead and another was severely injured in a collision Thursday, according to Coalinga area California Highway Patrol.

According to a statement released by the CHP, the accident occurred around 8:25 a.m. on Highway 41, south of State Route 33.

Antonio Avalos was driving a 2000 Ford north on Highway 41 when his vehicle’s left front tire deflated and caused him to swerve into the path of a 2014 Ford traveling southbound on the same highway, according to the CHP.

The driver of the 2014 Ford had no time to react before the two vehicles collided head-on, police said.

The driver of the 2014 Ford died as a result of the crash, while Avalos sustained major injuries and was air-lifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, police said.

CHP said the identity of the victim is not being released pending notification of family members.

CHP said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision and the accident will continue to be investigated.
