A man was arrested for driving under the influence early Friday morning after driving the wrong way on the highway and causing an accident, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Just before 3:30 a.m., CHP officers from the Hanford Area office responded to a report of a traffic collision in the area of westbound state Route 198, east of Houston Avenue.
During the course of the investigation, officials said they determined that 38-year-old Salvador Almanza from Porterville was driving a 2016 Honda Civic the wrong way, eastbound on the westbound lanes of SR-198, east of Houston Avenue.
Officers said at the same time, a 29-year-old man from Hanford was driving a 2013 Honda Civic westbound on SR-198 at an undetermined speed. They said the man was unable to avoid a collision and both cars collided head-on.
Both vehicles came to rest within the westbound lanes of SR-198 and CHP said all parties were transported to Kaweah Delta Hospital with moderate injuries.
Authorities said Almanza was determined to be impaired at the time of the crash and was placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
