This Sept. 10, 2015, file photo, shows a Nest Learning Thermostat at Nest Labs in Palo Alto, Calif. The thermostat recognizes when no one is home and turns itself down. A fully automated home is still years away, but the building blocks are already here.

Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) is offering up to $75 in incentives to participate in its Smart Thermostat program. SoCalGas wants to encourage owners of ecobee and Nest smart thermostat to conserve natural gas for heating the home.

To participate in the program participants must agree to allow minor adjustments to their smart thermostat temperature settings for a few hours on days when SoCalGas calls a Natural Gas Conservation event. They will receive notice two hours before adjustments are made via their smart thermostat, web portal, mobile app or email.

Residential owners of ecobee or Nest-registered devices with SoCalGas’ service territory are eligible to participate in the program. Residents are ineligible for the program if they are already enrolled in Southern California Edison’s Save Power Days.

SoCalGas customers who enroll in the program will receive a $50 check for signing up by March 1 and another $25 for staying enrolled through April 1. Customers who participated in the SoCalGas Advisory Thermostat Program with ecobee devices last year will receive $25 for their full participation in the Smart Thermostat Program this year.

“Smart thermostats can help customers save money and energy, and the incentives that SoCalGas is offering as part of the Smart Thermostat Program makes purchasing a device an even more worthwhile investment,” said Dan Rendler, director of customer programs and assistance at SoCalGas. “Participating in the program is an easy way for customers to conserve natural gas during critical periods while still being comfortable in their homes.”
