Celebrating by the sea

OCEANA - The Sentinel joined in with family and friends of Elvira Gomes as she celebrated her 93rd birthday in Oceana on June 9. Elvira is part of a ukulele band and a Eucharistic minister for her local church.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Kings County Cabrillo Club #9

HANFORD - The Kings County Cabrillo Club #9 recognized students from Kings County and the central coast high schools for the 2018 scholarship awards. 

Recipients are Tyler Ribeiro of Arroyo Grande High School; Drew Avila of Hanford High School; Eleana Brown, Blake Luis and Brian Phelps Jr., all of Lemoore High School; Haley Bettencourt and Kelsey McNary of Sierra Pacific High School; Ethan Carroll of Morro Bay High School; and Samantha Santana of St. Joseph High School of Santa Maria.

Kings County Tobacco Control Program

AVENAL - Lilian Molina, Avenal High School 2018 valedictorian and Avenal Youth Coalition’s president, received a $500 scholarship from the Professional Latin American Association. Molina plans to attend University of California Davis in the fall and major in micro-bioengineering.

Also recognized by the Kings County Tobacco Control Program were; Citlali Cepeda and Juan Ramirez both of Avenal. Cepeda will be attending Sacramento State University and will major in agribusiness. Ramirez will be attending West Hills College Coalinga.

The Kings County Tobacco-Free Partnership, a coalition of community members who work to address issues related to tobacco and secondhand smoke, partners with community organizations, including the Professional Latin American Association, to provide leadership opportunities for youth through community service and scholarship opportunities.

UNIVERSITY

Fresno Pacific University

FRESNO - On May 5, the Fresno Pacific University held the 2018 spring commencement for 646 eligible graduates at Selland Arena in Fresno.

Graduates from Hanford:

  • Ashton Peery, received a BA in psychology and graduated Cum Laude.
  • Tyler Price, received a BA in business administration.
  • Sarah Semas, received a BA in liberal studies.
  • Julie Berna, received a MA in STEM education.
  • Lorena De Souza, received a MA in STEM education.
  • Carolyn Jacques, received a MA in STEM education.
  • Tamera Johnson, received a MA in STEM education.
  • Jimmy Redger, received a MA in STEM education.
  • Sarah Watson, received a MA in STEM education.
  • Sarah Briggs, received a MS in nursing.
Graduates from Lemoore:
  • Kelsey Clemont, received a BA in liberal studies.
  • Lori Hernandez, received a MA in curriculum and teaching.

The ceremony honored 244 graduates from the bachelor’s degree completion program, 215 from the traditional bachelor’s degree program and 187 master’s candidates (including 19 from Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary). The commencement address was by Ashley Swearengin, former Fresno mayor and president/CEO of Central Valley Community Foundation.

Deans' List

AZUSA - Riley Bennett and Jerald Campbell of Lemoore made the academic Deans' List at Azusa Pacific University with a spring 2018 grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
