SELMA – Changes are coming to the Veterans Plaza at Selma’s Lincoln Park. Trees that are lifting the brick work, cement and electric lines will be replaced and the work is scheduled to begin Nov. 19.
The improvement is a joint project coordinated by the local American Legion Post #12, the Selma District Chamber of Commerce and the City of Selma.
A first phase included the installation of a large memorial plaque that recognizes the branches of the United States Armed Forces on May 26, 2018
For this current project, trees will first be removed and then a beautification project will begin.
“Shrubbery and smaller trees that will better serve this area will be planted and decrease damages to the area, yet provide a very nice background to the plaza,” Selma Recreation and Community Services Director Mikal Kirchner said.
The American Legion Post #12 will continue to work with the city in installing three statues within the plaza that will highlight the efforts and memory of veterans.
As the holiday season approaches, traditional festivities that include the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree and Santa’s House visits will continue to take place within the plaza.
