BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA - Selma wrestlers Richard Figueroa and Jace Luchau competed in the 2018 Who’s No. 1 dual match on Oct. 7 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The dual match featured the best high school wrestlers in the country and competitors competed for the top ranking in the nation.
Figueroa and Luchau were two of three high school wrestlers from California to compete in the event. They were also the only pair of teammates to wrestle at the dual match.
Figueroa earned a close 1-0 victory over No. 2 ranked wrestler Jacob Decatur of Ohio to claim the top national ranking in the 106-pound weight class.
Luchau lost 3-2 to No. 1 ranked wrestler Andrew Alirez of Colorado in the 152-pound match.
For the upcoming 2018-19 campaign, Luchau will enter his senior season at Selma while Figueroa will aim for his second-straight state title as a sophomore.
HANFORD- The Kingsburg High girls volleyball team kept its Central Sequoia League title hopes alive on Oct. 2 with a 3-1 win on the road over Hanford West.
Set scores for Kingsburg's victory over Hanford West were 25-11, 25-23,
25-11 and 25-14.
With the win, Kingsburg improved its overall record to 21-11 and are tied with Central Valley Christian for second-place in the CSL with a 6-2 record. They sit two games behind Exeter High, who is 8-0.
After the Vikings earned a first set victory, the Huskies tied it up winning the second set.
During the third and fourth sets, Kingsburg dominated the Huskies. The Vikings had double-digit wins in both of those sets.
Kingsburg outside hitter Jennah Torres had a season-high 19 kills, which was her third-straight game notching double-digit kills. It was also Torres’ seventh game of having double-digit kills, which is the most on the team this season.
Torres leads the team in kills at 169, which is fourth in the CSL.
Up next for the Vikings is a road matchup against Central Valley Christian on Oct. 11. Earlier this season, Kingsburg lost to CVC 3-0 at home on Sept. 18. The Vikings and the CVC Cavaliers will enter the matchup tied for second place in the CSL standings. Kingsburg then will play Exeter on Oct. 15 in Kingsburg.
HANFORD - The Selma High volleyball team remains winless in league play after losing 3-2 to Hanford West on Oct. 4 in Hanford.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 and 15-8. Hanford West also swept the season series against Selma.
As of Oct. 9, the Bears were 9-20 overall and 0-9 in CSL play.
Selma had a 2-1 lead, winning the first and third sets before losing the final two. Gurleen Brar led the Bears in kills at 11 and Jasmine Lozano was right behind her with nine.
On Oct. 2, Selma lost to Dinuba High 3-0 in Selma. It was the third time the Bears lost to the Emperors this season. Two of those losses were league games and the other occurred at a tournament at Madera South High School on Sept. 7-8.
On Oct. 5-6, Selma competed in a tournament at Hoover High School. The Bears went 2-4 in the tourney with wins over Roosevelt and Hanford high schools. Selma also competed against Kingsburg twice in the tournament, but lost both matches.
Selma plays Immanuel High on Thursday, Oct. 11, in Reedley before ending the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 17, against Kingsburg High in Selma.
