Selma High School wrestler Richard Figueroa was a silver medalist at the 2018 Cadet World Championships at Zagreb, Croatia, on July 2-5. Figueroa won a CIF State title as a freshman in March. 

ZAGREB, CROATIA - Selma High School wrestler Richard Figueroa earned a silver medal in the 2018 Cadet World Championships July 2-5 in Zagreb, Croatia.

The incoming sophomore represented the United States and came in second place in the 48 kilograms (106 pounds) finals with a 6-1 defeat to Alihasan Amirli of Azerbaijan. It was the only loss Figueroa had in the tournament. He came into the finals match with at 3-0 record.

Figueroa defeated Xiaolong Ye of China by pinfall with a pin time of 54 seconds to begin the world tourney. He followed that performance with a 10-0 win over Russia’s Valerii Androsov to advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinal round, Figueroa defeated Mykyta Abramov of Ukraine in a 10-4 decision to advance to the championship match.

As for Team USA, Figueroa and the rest of the squad came in second place at 132 points behind Iran’s 152.

As a freshman, Figueroa won a CIF State title as a 106 pounder and finished the year at 48-2 and was undefeated in California high school competition. His only losses came at the Walsh Ironman Classic in Ohio last season.
