The Selma and Kingsburg boys tennis teams will begin the postseason today.

Selma (13-4, 6-4 Central Sequoia League) will enter the Central Section Division III playoffs as the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Reedley (11-6, 6-4 North Yosemite League) in the first round today.

Last season, the Bears fell 8-1 to top-seeded Taft High School in the Division III quarterfinals. A week prior, Selma defeated No. 9 Edison 6-3 in the first round last season. The Bears were the No. 8 seed in last year’s playoffs.

As for Kingsburg, the Vikings (13-3, 7-3 CSL) will compete in the Central Section Division IV playoffs as the No. 6 seed. Kingsburg will host No. 11 Madera South in the first round today. According to Maxpreps, the Stallions’ record is 1-8-1 overall and 0-4 in the County Metro League.

Last season, the Vikings got eliminated after a 9-0 loss to top-seeded Sierra Pacific in the Division IV quarterfinals. Kingsburg was the No. 9 seed in the playoffs last year.

A week prior to the quarterfinal loss, the Vikings defeated No. 8 Arvin 9-0 in the first round.

Both team’s first round matches are scheduled to begin today at 3:30 p.m.

Wrestling

INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA - Selma wrestlers Jace Luchau, Richard Figueroa, and Devin Murphy competed at the 2019 FloNationals at Indiana, Pennsylvania on April 18-20.

Luchau placed first in the junior 70 kilogram freestyle bracket after defeating Matt Lee of Indiana 2-1 in the final round. The future Fresno State Bulldog went 4-0 in the tournament and outscored his opponents 31-5.

Murphy also wrestled in the junior bracket, but in the 61 kilogram division. Murphy wrestled in the finals, but placed second after falling 10-0 to Florida’s Frankie Tal-Sharer. Prior to the loss, Murphy outscored his opponents 30-6 in his first three matches of the tournament.

As for Figueroa, he wrestled in the cadet 51 kilogram bracket. The two-time CIF State champion placed second after falling 5-2 to Joey Cruz, who wrestles for Clovis North during the high school season.

Prior to his loss, Figueroa had three-straight technical fall wins enroute to the final round. Figueroa first three matches ended in a 10-0 final. Cruz was the only opponent to score against Figueroa.

Luchau and Figueroa were the top seeds in their brackets while Murphy was ranked second in his.
