Rock concert to benefit injured firefighter, animal shelter

Beer sampling will be part of Rock N Brews from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Selma Pioneer Village.

Selma Police Sgt. Rudy Alcatraz says he cannot imagine all the changes that colleague Selma firefighter Chris Nelson and his family will have to endure in the months and years ahead. Nelson is still recovering from a critical February injury and Alcatraz says the more tickets they can sell to the upcoming Rock N’ Brews, the better.

“It’s endless what they’re going to have to do differently,” Alcatraz said. He recalls working with Nelson on numerous calls for more than a decade. “We’re going to do anything we can do to help him out and his family.”

To that end, the Selma Firefighters Association is co-sponsoring a benefit concert featuring the Las Vegas-based Arena Tribute band.

Arena consists of Gary Dilger on bass and vocals, lead singer Drew Hart, Susan Davis on keyboard and vocals, drummer Joey Grillo and Michael Christian on guitar and vocals. Described as the “Masters of the Metal,” Arena is reminiscent of the 1980s hair metal bands. They’ll perform music from bands such as Journey, Bon-Jovi, Van Halen, Def Leppard and Heart.

Having travelled to hear the band perform, Alcatraz says “they do an awesome job.”

The event will also benefit the Second Chance Animal Shelter of Selma.

“Last year, they were in the process of building a new facility. This year, we’re going to see what their needs are.”

A variety of beers from numerous breweries will be available during the 21-years-and-older event. Alcatraz said the Selma Pioneer Village setting will be the perfect venue for the night.

“Every penny goes to (Nelson’s) benefit. That’s why we’ve got to sell a lot of tickets.”

To ensure a top-notch event, Alcatraz said sponsors stepped up to help fund bringing Arena to the event. He cited donors Louis Franco, Lou Romero of Selma Pallet & Grating, Gerald Hayes with Kings Mortgage Services and Bill Purewal with Pure Fresh Sales.
