CLOVIS - When the Central Section Championship meet concluded on Saturday, Selma and Kingsburg both had one individual that will compete for one more weekend.

DeAndra McDaniel of Selma and Kalobe Jimenez of Kingsburg both qualified for the CIF State meet after competing through rainy weather at Buchanan High School on Saturday.

In the Valley finals, McDaniel qualified for the state meet after placing in the top three in the long and triple jump events. It’ll be his second-straight year that he’ll compete in both events against state competition. He’ll compete in the triple jump event at the meet for third time in his prep career.

McDaniel placed third in the long jump event with a finish of 22 feet and 1 ½ inches. In the triple jump, McDaniel was second with a mark of 46 feet and eight inches. McDaniel’s second place finish was over three feet shorter than Clovis North’s Caleb Foster, who won both long and triple jump events.

It’ll be McDaniel’s first time representing Selma at the state meet after competing for Natomas High during his junior and sophomore seasons.

Last season at the state meet, McDaniel placed fourth overall in the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet and 9 ¼ inches. In the long jump, McDaniel had a mark of 22 feet and 2 ¾ inches, but didn’t qualify to compete in the event on the second day.

As for Jimenez, he’ll represent the Vikings in the 110 meter hurdle after placing third in the Valley meet with a finish of 14.71 seconds.

Jimenez also competed in the 300 meter hurdle at the Valley meet, but fell short of qualifying for the event at state. Jimenez’s had the fourth best finish at 40.38 seconds, which was behind Buchanan’s Clark Donaghy time of 39. 76.

Selma’s Mia Salinas fell short of qualifying for the state meet after finishing fifth overall in the 300 meter hurdle. Even though she fell short, Salinas set a personal record in the event at 45.44 seconds.

The top three finishers in each event at the Central Section Championships move on to the CIF State meet.
