New Rec Coordinator: Liz Martinez

Selma’s Recreation and Community Services Department has a new recreation coordinator, Liz Martinez.

SELMA – Now that Selma’s Recreation and Community Services Department has a new recreation coordinator, we asked Liz Martinez some questions after she was introduced at the Feb. 19 Selma City Council meeting.

Recreation Director Mikal Kirchner said he’s glad to have full-time help and he hopes to expand their department’s services with Martinez’ help.

Martinez said she’s excited to work in her hometown and is eager to expand services as she takes over at the Nick Medina Senior Center and assists with the recreation department and youth services.

“I hope to make some good changes, for the Senior Center especially,” she said. “Whatever I can do to help Mikal, that’s my goal. I’m excited to be here and get to work.”

Here are some questions we asked Martinez and her replies to introduce her to the Selma community:

Q: Tell us about your educational background:

A: I graduated from Selma High School in 2014. I will be receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration with an emphasis in Community and Youth Services this May from California State University, Fresno. Being part of the Recreation Department was such a great experience all the professors and staff taught me so much!

Q: What has been some of your previous professional experience?

A: I have worked for the City of Kingsburg as a Recreation Leader for three years and the City of Fresno PARCS Department as a youth job preparation instructor for two years. I have also been volunteering for the California Parks and Recreation Society District 7 for the past four years I served as their student liaison and helped plan events across the Central Valley. All of these experiences have taught me how regarding it is to be a public servant.

Q: Tell us about your family:

A: I live in Selma, I have two loving parents, one older brother, one older sister, a younger sister and a loving dog named Marley.

Q: Do you have any unusual hobbies outside of work?

A: Serving others is my hobby! I really do enjoy my job, but outside of work I like to spend time with family and friends, I enjoy tennis, watching Netflix and Hulu and I enjoy going on adventures with my boyfriend.

Q: What else would you like readers to know?

A: I am super excited to finally be serving the community that I grew up in! I have a passion for working and serving others so I hope I can help make a difference in this community.
