Kingsburg shuts out Selma

EXETER - Behind two goals from Denise Elias, the Kingsburg girls soccer team defeated Exeter 2-1 to claim the Vikings third-straight Central Sequoia League championship on Feb. 1.

The win improved Kingsburg to 18-4-1 overall and 11-0 in CSL play. During the past three years, the Vikings went 31-0 against league opponents.

In the game against the Monarchs, Kingsburg allowed its first point from an CSL opponent this season. Exeter’s score occurred late in the second half when the Vikings had a 2-0 lead.

Elias scored her goals in the 17th and 66th minutes. The first goal came from an assist from Colbi Stewart and the second one was from a penalty kick.

Seeding for the Division IV playoffs will be posted on the CIF Central Section website on Saturday. According to Maxpreps, the Vikings are the No. 2 ranked team in the division.

The first round of the Division IV playoffs begin on Feb. 12.

Selma wins sixth-straight game

SELMA - The Selma girls basketball team put together a dominant performance on its senior night, defeating Immanuel 68-31 on Jan. 30.

It was the sixth-straight win for the Bears, who improved to 24-3 overall and 10-1 in CSL play.

Audrey Gonzalez scored a team-high 22 points and recorded seven rebounds. Yesenia Sanchez notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Vieira scored nine points, but led the team in steals at five.

From the start of the game, Selma took control with a 31-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bears continued to play well on both ends of the floor during the second quarter, ending the first half with a 41-12 lead. After, Selma extended its lead to 37 points after leading 58-21 at the end of the third quarter.

The Bears will await its Division III playoff seeding, which will be posted on the CIF Central Section website on Saturday. Selma is the top ranked team in Division III, according to Maxpreps.

The first round of the Division III playoffs will begin on Feb. 12.

Boys soccer

KINGSBURG - The Kingsburg boys soccer team lost its ninth-straight game on Feb. 1 after falling 4-2 to Exeter in the Vikings home finale.

Kingsburg dropped to 3-17 overall and remain winless in the CSL at 0-9. Two days prior, the Vikings fell 2-0 to CVC. Box scores from both games were not provided.

EASON - The Selma boys soccer team defeated the Exeter Monarchs 4-3 in a CSL game at Washington Union’s John Ventura Stadium on Jan. 28.

It was the Bears fourth game in six days and it came two days after playing a back-to-back-to-back set on Jan. 23-25.

The Bears improved to 11-6-3 overall and 5-3-1 in league play after the win. There was no box scored provided of the game.

Selma is expected to compete in the Division II playoffs and the Bears postseason seed will be posted on the CIF Central Section website on Saturday.

The first round of the Division III playoffs start on Feb. 13.

Girls soccer

REEDLEY - The Selma girls soccer team defeated Immanuel 2-1 on the road on Jan. 30.

The Bears improved to 10-6-1 overall and 5-5-1 in CSL play.

Two days prior, Selma played Exeter to a 1-1 draw. The Bears' stats were not provided from both games.

Selma is expected to compete in the Division III playoffs, which will begin on Feb. 12. The Bears seed will be posted on the CIF Central Section website on Saturday.

Boys basketball

REEDLEY - The Selma boys basketball team remain winless in the CSL after losing 79-40 on the road to Immanuel on Jan. 30.

The Bears dropped to 6-21 overall and 0-11 in league play. Two days prior, Selma came close its first CSL win of the season in a 64-59 loss to Exeter at home. Selma’s stats from both games were not provided.
