Bree Alvarez, former Lemoore High standout, had 21 points to help lead the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds women's basketball team to a 83-74 win over UC Merced on Nov. 26 at FPU.
Alvarez is averaging 14.2 points per game through five games for the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds. Alvarez ranks second on the team in scoring and has helped lead the Sunbirds to a 4-1 start to the 2018 season.
She appeared in 20 games for the Sunbirds, including 16 starts and .led the team with 13.8 points per game in her redshirt junior season with FPU in 2017-18 season. She was named to the All-PacWest Third Team and was an Academic All-PacWest selection.
Alvarez played four seasons at Lemoore High School, where she graduated in 2013, for head coach Miguel Macias. She was a three-time Team MVP and a three-time First-Team All-League selection.
She averaged 16.8 points, 3.9 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game her final season at Lemoore in 2013.
The Sunbirds will be in action on Thursday, Nov. 29, against Chaminade University in Hawaii. It will be the first game of a five game road trip for the team.
Fresno Pacific will return home to play Concordia University on Saturday, Dec. 15.
Kate McClard, former Hanford High standout, is averaging 3.5 points per game in five games in her freshman season.
Janelle Sumilong, former Hanford High standout, is averaging 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the College of Sequoias women’s basketball team in 2018.
Sumilong has helped lead COS to a 4-2 start to the season. COS plays Antelope Valley on Thursday, Nov. 29, in the 42nd Annual Gilcrest Tournament at College of the Sequoias in Visalia. The tournament runs from Nov. 29 to Sunday, Dec. 2.
The Hanford High boys soccer team opened their 2018 season on Nov. 26 with a 3-2 overtime loss to Chowchilla High. Dominic Ayala had both goals for the Bullpups, while Victor Olivares had one assist. The Bullpups return to action on Friday, Nov. 30, competing in the Harold S. Young Tournament in Clovis.
The Hanford High School girls soccer team will olay Selma High School today at 4:30 p.m. at Hanford High.
The Sierra Pacific boys basketball team will be hosting the 9th Annual Golden Bears Tip Off Classic starting today and running through Saturday, Dec. 1 at Sierra Pacific High School. Sierra Pacific has a bye today and will play Kern Valley at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Nov. 29. They then will play Riverdale High on Friday, Nov. 30, before playing Woodlake High at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The Hanford High girls basketball team will play Independence High School from Bakersfiled in the first round of the Redwood Tournament today in Visalia. They will continue play in the tournament on Thursday, nov. 29 against Bullard High. They then will play North High School on Friday, Nov. 30, before ending the tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1 against Bakersfield Christian High School.
Hanford West High School girls basketball team will compete in the Selma Shoot out beginning today and running to Saturday, Dec. 1 in Selma. The Huskies open the tournament against Sanger High at 6;30 p.m. at Selma High School.
