VISALIA — For the second time this season, Hanford West was pushed to five sets in a league match, and just like the previous time, the Huskies pulled it out on Thursday 3-2.
Hanford West (20-2, 5-1 WYL) was dominant in their fifth set and defeated host El Diamante, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-5.
The Huskies have now outscored their opponents 30-11 in the deciding fifth set, but most importantly, end the first round of league play with a 5-1 record.
Madison Sousa had an impressive game-high 20 kills along with three aces and 11 digs. Shelby Perez finished in double figures with 10 kills and led the team in serve attempts (26), aces (4) and serving points (14).
Hanford West’s supporting cast of Taylor Gomez, Mary Schoals, Aissa Perico and Ashlyn Dunn combined for 20 kills. Perico and Dunn also combined for 46 of the team’s 48 assists.
Defensive specialist Domonique Ambers had both a game-high 13 digs and 39 receptions.
Hanford West will take part in today’s Sunnyside Varsity Girls Volleyball Tournament in Fresno. The Huskies will have a couple days off until they face their next league opponent, Lemoore (9-8, 1-4 WYL), on the road on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. El Diamante (9-8, 2-3 WYL) will travel to face Golden West (11-7, 3-2 WYL) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Hanford West’s freshman/sophomore and junior varsity teams both lost 0-2.
