El Diamante (2-3, 1-0 WYL) vs. Mt. Whitney (1-4, 0-1)
VISALIA — El Diamante’s Devontae Freeman scored twice in the fourth quarter as his team went on to defeat Mt. Whitney 38-16.
The league-opening win began with Miners quarterback Parker Boswell finding Jake Garbani in the end zone for the 18-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Boswell ran for another in the second as well as running back Freeman. El Diamante had a 24-2 lead at halftime.
Mt. Whitney tried to mount a comeback in the second half when quarterback Jaedyn Pineda fired touchdowns to wide receivers Jonathan Hadley and Mason Parker in the third. Pineda finished 14-of-25 with 205 yards passing and two touchdowns. He added 60 rushing yards on 14 carries.
It was a one-possession game entering the fourth quarter, 24-16, but Freeman put the game on ice with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth, including a 60-yard score.
El Diamante’s next game is against Hanford (1-4, 1-0 WYL) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at home. Mt. Whitney faces Hanford West (3-2, 0-1 WYL) on the road on September 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Golden West (4-0) vs. Exeter (4-1)
VISALIA — Golden West handed Exeter their first loss of the season as they blazed their way to a 48-3 win on Friday.
The Trailblazers led 21-3 at halftime and kept their foot on the gas scoring 14 points in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth.
Exeter’s only score came in the second quarter on a field goal.
Golden West travels to open up league play with a match against Redwood (2-3, 0-1 WYL) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
