LARKSPUR – In its first state finals appearance in history, the Lemoore 10-year-old All-Stars went down swinging at the Little League Northern California state championships in Larkspur.
Lemoore went 1-2 to finish in fifth place at the tournament to put a cap on its longest postseason run ever.
“The teams were really good,” said Lemoore manager Lenny Bray. “But we fought hard and played well.”
Coming off the first Section 7 championship in the 10-year-old division in Lemoore Little League history, Lemoore defeated Susanville 17-5 Saturday to open the double elimination tournament.
Sunday, Lemoore found itself in a pitchers’ duel with Petaluma, falling 3-1.
Going into the state tournament, Lemoore had recorded just 21 strikeouts in its previous six games. Petaluma had nine strikeouts against Lemoore, limiting the team to two hits.
“That’s the best pitcher we’ve gone up against,” Bray said.
The loss knocked Lemoore to the elimination bracket with the team losing to Cambrian Park 11-6 on Monday to end its tournament run.
Lemoore had a chance late, getting the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, but hit into the game-ending out.
Bray was happy with how the team played and recorded that first Section title. The team's run also included winning the District 34 championship.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for the town of Lemoore,” he said of making the state finals.
