The Sierra Pacific girls basketball team was awarded the top seed in the Division V state playoffs Sunday afternoon.
“It’s great that we have the first seed,” Sierra Pacific coach Amy Bush said. “As long as we play well and do our thing, we get to play at home, so that’s a huge advantage.”
The Golden Bears will host every game until the state finals if they were to make it that far. Up first, they will face Reseda (13-13, 4-8 VML) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Reseda was the No. 6 seed in the CIFLACS Division IV girls playoffs and ended up winning the championship.
“We’re excited to be in the state playoffs and to still be playing,” Bush said “That in itself is great and the girls aren’t done.”
This is the third consecutive year the Golden Bears have made the state playoffs. Two years ago, they were the 11-seed in Division V and lost by five in the first round. Last year, Sierra Pacific was the 7-seed in Division IV and made it to the regional semifinals before losing on the road to Village Christian by 12.
Bush said the experience the girls got the previous two years makes a difference and hopes that they continue to play their game and play hard.
“This year, we definitely want to get further than we did last year,” Bush said. “That’s been what the goal is … and to continue to grow.”
