Selma falls short of masters title

BAKERSFIELD - The Selma boys wrestling team placed second at the California Interscholastic Federation Central Section Masters Tournament at North Bakersfield High School on Feb. 24.

Selma scored 229 ½ points as a squad, which was 61 points behind tournament winner Buchanan (290 ½ team points).

The margin between Selma and third-place Clovis High School was 86 ½ points.

There were seven Bears wrestlers in the finals with five of them earning first place.

Richard Figueroa (106 pounds), Robert Areyano (132), Tony Mendoza (145), Jace Luchau (152) and Christian Rodriguez (170) made it to the top of the podium for Selma. Figueroa earned most outstanding wrestler of the tournament in the lower weight division.

Tristan Lujan (113 pounds) and Xavier Moran (285) were the only Bears finalists to lose in the finals.

Lujan lost to Buchanan’s Maximo Renteria and Moran fell to Seth Nevills of Clovis, who is the top-ranked heavyweight in the state.

Other Selma wrestlers that placed at Masters and qualified for the CIF state tournament were Eric Rivera (120 pounds, seventh place), Tyler Sepulveda (126, fourth), Luis Ramos (138, eighth), Oscar Diaz (160, third), Isaiah Jimenez (195, fifth).

The Bears will be aiming for their first CIF State wrestling title in the program’s history at Rabobank Arena in downtown Bakersfield on March 2-3.

Kingsburg’s Jonathan Viveros qualifies for CIF State meet

BAKERSFIELD - Kingsburg wrestler and 120-pounder Jonathan Viveros was the lone Kingsburg Viking that qualified for the CIF State wrestling tournament by placing fourth in his weight-class at the masters tourney on Feb 24.

Viveros made it the semifinals, but fell short of the finals after losing to eventual champion Devin Murphy of Clovis North.

In the consolation rounds, Viveros was victorious against Cade Lucio of Bakersfield High School - the second time both met at the tournament - before losing in the third place match to Brandon Paulson of Clovis.

As for other Kingsburg competitors, Jett Jackson (120 pounds), Brandon Rocha (160) and Dylan Stockton went 0-2 in the tournament. Alfred Carpenter of 170 pounds went 1-2 defeating Highland’s Michael Aguirre is his first match of the tourney before dropping two straight in the consolation rounds.


SELMA - The Selma baseball team dropped its home opener to Sierra Pacific High School with a 7-1 defeat on Feb. 24.

Selma was trailing 3-1 through six innings until Sierra Pacific broke the game open with a four-run seventh.

The Bears’ lineup struggled by only having two hits against Golden Bears pitcher Zach Barber.

Currently, Selma is 1-2 in its first week of the 2018 season.

The Bears dropped its season opener with a 5-0 road loss to Central High School on Feb. 20, but defeated Mission Oak High School 7-0 on the road two days after.

In the win against Mission Oak, Selma had 11 hits while the Hawks only had three.

The Bears will look to get back into the win column in an afternoon game against Sanger High School at home on Feb. 28. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. Selma will also face Madera South as part of the Central Valley Diamond Classic at home on March 3 at 6 p.m.

KINGSBURG - The Kingsburg baseball team earned its first win of the season with an 11-9 home win against Fowler High School on Feb. 24.

Currently, Kingsburg is 1-1-1 in its first week of the 2018 season. The Vikings opened the year on the road with a 6-6 tie against Firebaugh High School on Feb. 20. Two days later, Kingsburg lost 8-0 on the road to Madera South, which was part of the CVDC tourney.

The Vikings face a couple of undefeated squads on the road this week in Sierra Pacific (4-0) and Sanger (3-0). Kingsburg will play the Golden Bears on Feb. 28 and will face Sanger on March 3.


FRESNO - The Kingsburg softball team dropped its season opener in a 12-6 road loss to Edison High School on Feb. 23.

In the top of the sixth inning, Kingsburg scored three runs to cut its deficit to 6-9. In the bottom half of the inning, Edison extended its lead by scoring three more runs.

Marissa Gonzalez was one of two Vikings with multiple hits in the game. The freshman went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a double and a run scored. Blaire Wilson - a freshman - went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Next up for Kingsburg is the Redwood Invitational at El Diamante High School on March 2-3. After, the Vikings will have a road double-header against El Diamante and Buchanan on March 5. Both games are part of a tournament at Buchanan High School that will conclude on March 10.
