SELMA – Sal’s Mexican Restaurant earned two honors at the 2017 Best of the Valley Restaurant Awards March 5.

The local eatery won in the Best Mexican Restaurant category and co-owner Lorraine Salazar was named Restaurateur of the Year. Salazar and her brother, Karl Salazar, are second-generation owners of the restaurants. The restaurant now has three locations in Selma, Fresno and Madera.

Reedley chef and cookbook author Jon Koobation was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony that took place at the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center. Koobation owns Jon’s Bear Club.

California Restaurant Association’s Fresno Chapter President Rick Braden said the awards celebrate the many contributions restaurants make to not only the local economy, but also as special gathering places.

“One of the most impressive things to see is the variety in the restaurant community in these categories,” Braden said. “The Central Valley has a wonderful variety of cuisines to offer from fine dining to great breakfasts and from Asian to Mexican food.”
