SELMA – Two of Selma High’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) Marksmanship Team cadets finished as the top two shooters at a competition at Parlier High School Sept. 23. A third cadet placed eighth out of 61 shooters.
Instructor retired Master Sgt. Reynaldo A. Cruz reported that Parlier High’s Navy JROTC program hosted the Shoulder-to-Shoulder Marksmanship match comprising of the sporter and precision-shooting categories. JROTC programs of all branches brought 13 teams totaling 61 individuals from schools within and out of the Central Valley.
The Selma High School MCJROTC program registered two teams of four shooters each. The teams finished seventh and first place overall in team competition. As individuals, Cadet Sgt. Estefanie Lopez finished in eighth place, Cadet Gunnery Sgt. Samantha Louie finished in second place and Cadet Gunnery Sgt. Gabriela Sanchez-Rios finished in first place overall in the individual competition.
“Marksmanship competitions are ran under the stipulations of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, a nonprofit organization that initially started to educate on weapon safety. Marksmanship is an actual varsity sport in the NCAA and competitions are held at national levels,” Cruz said.
