SELMA – United Way is offering free tax preparation services April 14 at the Selma Neighborhood Resource Center. The Center is at 1940 E. Front St., Suite 102, Selma. Help will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in English and Spanish.
The free tax preparation service is available for those who earned less than $54,000 in the 2017 tax year with the online option at www.myfreetaxes.org for those making $66,000 or less annually. Taxpayers may call United Way at (866) 559-4211 to schedule an appointment. Residents may also file taxes on their own for free by visiting www.myfreetaxes.org.
Volunteers will help filers determine if they qualify for the California Earned Income Tax Credit, the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit or the Federal Child Tax Credit.
Citi Community Development invested $2.6 million nationwide to expand awareness, access and capacity of the free tax preparation services during the 2018 tax season.
Citi Community Development Director Bob Annibale said 44 percent of U.S. households lack sufficient savings to cover a $400 emergency expense, thus determining if they qualifying for a tax refund is critical to many.
“This eye-opening statistic illustrates the persistent financial vulnerability millions of Americans still feel despite the growing economy. Earned Income Tax Credits are often the largest cash infusion workers will receive all year, providing an essential financial cushion for those households living paycheck to paycheck,” Annibale said. “The investment Citi is making ensures eligible families will have access to free, high-quality tax preparation services, and the full roster of tax credits they have earned.”
In 2016, the United Way’s tax prep efforts returned more than $10 million dollars to local taxpayers, Annibale said.
