SELMA – Abraham Lincoln Middle School celebrated Red Ribbon Week with a theme based on a catch-phrase from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, “The Flintstones” from the 1960s.

ALMS Activities Director Jennifer Miller-McColm said the leadership students brainstormed various theme ideas and “Yabba Dabba Don’t Do Drugs” was an instant hit.

“Everyone in class loved it. They thought it was creative and original,” Miller-McColm said. The students also created activities and dress up days for the week to include both the Flintstones and Red Ribbon Week anti-drug themes.

Red Ribbon Week was Oct. 23-31 and was first started in 1985 as a grassroots effort by parents who wanted to play a more proactive role in drug prevention. First Lady Nancy Reagan was an honorary chairwoman of the national effort. Today, the Red Ribbon campaign serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug-prevention activities.
