SELMA – In honor of long-time Lion member Don Heffernan, the Selma Central Valley Lioness Lions Club donated 125 backpacks filled with school supplies to Calwa Elementary School.

Heffernan is a long-time Calwa resident and former member of Calwa Lions Club. He’s served as a Lion for more than 50 years.

“Eighty years young, Lion Don cares deeply for his community and still collects newspapers to recycle in order to help fund eyeglasses and exams in the Calwa area. Preserving and improving eyesight is one of the fundamental goals of Lions Clubs International,” Maxine Abe said.

Abe said that Calwa Principal Corrinna Rivera and Vice Principal Sebastian Benavidez “were thrilled to accept the backpacks on behalf of their 748 students.” The school is the lone elementary school in Calwa for preschool through sixth grade.

“We are one big family,” Benavidez said. When asked what else could be done for the student body, Rivera mentioned that children’s shoes and socks were greatly needed. The Central Valley Lioness Lions also collected those items for the students. Lion President Lucy Herrera, Lions Don and Judy Heffernan, Bev Cho, Claudia Ayala and Maxine Abe helped with the delivery.

Residents interested in donating to the effort my contact Calwa Elementary at 457-2610 or drop off shoes or donations at Cho’s Kitchen at 2030 E. Front St., or contact Lion Maxine Abe, 977-8192.
