When a place has been part of a town's dining tradition for more than 100 years, there's usually a good reason why. It's no different with Hanford's "Star Restaurant," which has served up hot and tasty food in its Sixth Street location since the year 1900.
The Star is the kind of place you go when you're in the mood to take a trip back in time, to an era when you could walk into a casual dining establishment, take a seat at the counter or at a booth, and watch the action around you as you perused the local paper and made yourself at home. If you happened to be dining at The Star, you might even look out the window and watch the trains as they passed by on the old Southern Pacific tracks.
A good friend and I headed over to The Star the other day when we were in the mood for some good food and a comfortable place to sit and catch up with each other's busy lives. The Star was the perfect place.

Breakfast — it’s commonly known as the most important meal of the day. But a small group of volunteers in Visalia have given it some added importance.
On the second Sunday of each month, members of Visalia Elks Lodge 1298 prepare a breakfast spread that’s enjoyed by about 300 people.
“We net about $2,200, and it all goes to veterans,” said Chuck Lee, the lodge’s exalted ruler.

Fruit fights childhood obesity, according to studies by Tufts and Baylor universities that linked high fruit and vegetable consumption by children with a lower body mass index. Fruit is naturally low in calories but high in nutrients like immune system boosting vitamin C, water and fiber, which helps children feel fuller and more energized with fewer calories.
