The West Hills Community College District has a new chancellor.
WHCCD Chancellor Frank Gornick said the district’s board of trustees selected West Hills College Coalinga Interim President Stuart Van Horn to take the spot. Gornick is retiring after 23 years with the district.
“I think the board did a great job in their selection,” Gornick said on Monday. “He is the right guy for the right time in the right place.”
Van Horn has been with the district since 2013 where he served as vice chancellor of educational services and workforce development.
During the interview process, he said that West Hills is a district of doers and high achievers and emphasized the importance of a diverse staff at each of the colleges and at the district level.
"When you are looking at demographics, our colleges need to reflect communities that we serve," he said.
Gornick said Van Horn will take over on July 1, 2017.
After a search, seven candidates were selected to be interviewed by a committee. Four of those — Van Horn and three women — were chosen to met with faculty, students and the public on Dec. 12, then with the board of trustees on Thursday for the final selection.
