HANFORD —Greg Henry, the principal at Sierra Pacific High School died Monday.
According to a press release Tuesday from the Kings County Sheriff's Office, the department had received information that Henry was "distraught… and possibly suicidal." The sheriff's office reported that Hanford Police officers found Henry dead from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound" on Monday north of Hanford in Kings County.
Assistant Kings County Sheriff Dave Putnam, said Henry texted a message to his family that said he did not want to put his family through some sort of an investigation and wanted to say goodbye.
“It was enough to make the family want to call the police and ask them to check [on] his welfare,” he said.
District officials sent out a district-wide email to all other local schools letting them know that Henry had died Monday.
Henry took over as principal at Sierra Pacific in July 2015 after serving as the school’s vice principal since October 2014.
Previous to working at Sierra Pacific, Henry served as the principal of Pioneer Middle School for 10 years.
Before that, he was a math teacher at Hanford West as well as the school’s boys water polo coach from 1999-2004.
A vigil is being organized for 7:30 p.m. today at Hanford West.
