HANFORD — The 2017 Kings County Spelling Bee came to a close Friday afternoon when the eighth-grade portion of the competition was complete. In the end, there were eight winners in first through eighth grades in the four-day event.


  • First grade – Jaxon Mendoza, Kings River-Hardwick School
  • Second grade – Donovan Chantengco, John C. Fremont Elementary School
  • Third grade – Ethan Platts, Cinnamon Elementary School
  • Fourth grade – Xander Stone, Monroe Elementary School
  • Fifth grade – Annika Twiford, Pioneer Elementary School
  • Sixth grade – Hannah Nguyen, Pioneer Middle School
  • Seventh grade – Grace Nguyen, Pioneer Middle School
  • Eighth grade –Nathanael Atmajian, Hanford Christian School

Annika, Grace and Nathanael travel in May to Stockton to compete in the state finals, where all the winners from the state’s different counties will compete. The Kings County Office of Education sponsors the students by paying their entry fees into the state Spelling Bee.
