Susan Ruth Bowden Wing

February 1, 1953 – November 10, 2017

Susan Ruth Bowden was welcomed into this world by her parents Jim and Shirley Bowden on February 1, 1953 in Hanford, California. Susan Ruth Bowden Wing, An Angel with “Wings”, passed away on November 10, 2017 at the age of 64 while responding to the call of someone in need, just as she always lived her life.

Susan was raised in Hanford attending local schools. In her early years growing up in Hanford the highlight of her summer was attending the YMCA Camp Redwood with her sister and friends. Throughout her childhood, many hours were spent at the slough with her sister, brother and friends. She later moved to Fresno and graduated from Hoover High in 1971. Susan then headed to California State University at Long Beach where she majored in Home Economics and minored in Nutrition. She graduated in 1975 and returned to Hanford and joined the family business at Superior Dairy. Susan transformed “The Dairy” to a resounding and vibrant destination eatery. Its ice cream is rated as one of the best in the nation and is a perennial blue ribbon winner. It is one of Hanford's most honored and respected establishments.

When Susan Bowden met Ernie Wing, worlds collided and the result was a perfect bond. Susan and Ernie were married on February 17, 1981. As she always said, “who knows how it is right, but it is perfect.” It was also the blending of the two finest eating establishments this area will ever see…Superior Dairy and The Imperial Dynasty! Susan and Ernie's love for each other produced a son, James. He was her sunrise and sunset. Whenever she spoke of him her radiance was apparent to all around and he was her best friend.

Susan was, in her words, CEO and Chief Ice Cream Scooper at Superior Dairy in Hanford, an area institution. Superior Dairy was founded in 1929 by her grandfather, F. Judson Bowden followed by her father, Jim Bowden and is currently co-owned by Susan and her brother Tim Jones. Her son, James, will continue to operate Superior Dairy as a fourth generation family member along with his father, Ernie.

Her business acumen aside, it was her acceptance and respect of all people that defined Susan. Her home was a landing for everyone-and all were welcomed as family. She was everyone's best friend and her friendship was beyond genuine. She was always “holding court” and reigned like no other. Her kindness, generosity, warmth and benevolence pierced even the most hardened soul. In no time at all, to be around Susan was to be in the midst of a glorious experience. You could never leave her house in a bad mood. She made life come alive!

Susan‘s love of life was exhibited often in the many charitable endeavors in which she participated. She was always helping out; donating her time, energy, money and ice cream to a variety of causes. She was a major contributor to the Raven's Rescue, Paws and Claws and Strides For Life Colon Cancer Foundation. To say she will be missed is an understatement.

Susan is survived by her loving husband, Ernest Wing and beloved son James Wing along with her sister, Jane Bowden, step-brothers Tim Jones (Kathy) and Skip Jones. She is also survived by her brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws : Kathleen McComas, Sherman Wing, Leilani Shimizu (Richard), Jennifer Wing, Geoffrey Wing (Lisa) and Peggi Harris (Chaz) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
