Sophia Cornelia Loogman

February 8, 1922 – February 27, 2018

Sophia Cornelia Loogman, a longtime resident of Laton, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. She was 96 years old. Sophia was born on February 8, 1922 in Spaamwoode, Holland (the Netherlands), to Jacob and Jacoba Van Ruiten, the oldest child in what became a family of eight children. In 1947 Sophie and the Van Ruiten family, after enduring the hardships of WWII, immigrated to the US, settling in the Artesia area of southern California. In 1949 Sophie met Pete Loogman at the wedding of a family friend. They married and settled in the Hardwick area outside of Hanford. Sophie and Pete raised six children on their small fruit and cotton farm. After 52 years together, Pete passed away in 2002. Sophie was one of the oldest members of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Laton. She lived out her final years on the family farm enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren and treating them to her homemade butter cookies and applesauce.

Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Pete and by her brothers John Van Ruiten and Hank Van Ruiten. She is survived by her children; George Loogman (Patricia) of Hanford, Jim Loogman (Nancy) of Hanford, Pete Loogman (Diane) of Laton, Tony Loogman (Rhonda) of Reedley, Patricia Newquist of El Doroado Hills, Marlene Ormonde (Anthony) of Clovis. Also surviving are her brothers Jake Van Ruiten of Sanger and Tom Van Ruiten of Oakdale and her sisters Johanna Mulligan of Selma, Mary Spruit of Arizona and Ann Loogman of Escalon. She leaves her beloved 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Sophie will be held on Monday, March 5, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Whitehurst McNamara Funeral Home, 100 W. Bush St. Hanford. CA. Rosary and Funeral Mass will begin on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Hanford.
