Evelyn Borba Mattas

August 24, 1921 – November 2, 2017

Evelyn Borba Mattas passed away Thursday, November 2, 2017 in Hanford at the age of 96. Evelyn was born to Adrian and Mary Xavier in Tipton California on August 24, 1921. She lived and worked in Hanford for many years. She was married to Frank A. Borba until his passing in 1976. Later she married Manuel Mattas and moved to Visalia. They were together until his death in 2001.

Evelyn was a strong, hardworking woman. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her three sons, she worked at Iseman's Department store and Superway Grocery market in Hanford. She was a member of St. Brigid Catholic Church, the Cabrillo Club and the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America. In her leisure time Evelyn loved to work complicated jigsaw puzzles and cook for her family. She always had homemade cookies for everyone. She will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother.

Evelyn is survived by her children; Frank Borba (Louise) of Kingsburg, Johnnie Borba (Dena) of Hanford and James Borba (Corinne) of Bakersfield. She is also survived by her step-children Virgil Mattas of Fresno, Jerry Mattas of San Luis Obispo, Marlene Allee of Visalia and Patricia Matherly of Visalia. She leaves 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her first husband Frank R. Borba, her second husband Manuel L. Mattas and by five brothers and two sisters.

Visitation for Evelyn will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 9:30 -11:00 am at Whitehurst McNamara Funeral Home, 100 W. Bush St. Hanford. A rosary will be said at 11:30 am at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 200 E. Florinda St, Hanford. Funeral mass will follow at 12:00 pm. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Donations can be made to Valley Christian Home, 511 E. Malone St., Hanford, St. Brigid Catholic Church or the local American Cancer Society.
