Barbara K. Alewine

July 1, 1953 - October 16, 2017

Barbara K. Alewine (maiden name Powell) passed away peacefully on October 16, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She and her husband, Wes Alewine, were married for 41 years and have lived in Hanford for the last 37 years. They dedicated their lives to raising their three daughters and grandchildren, as well as the many other children Barbara served throughout her career in early childhood education in Kings County.

Barbara was born in Hanford to John and Elsie Powell, Hanford residents for over 50 years. Barbara graduated from Hanford High School in 1971, and attended College of the Sequoias, where she obtained a degree in early childhood education and development. After college, Barbara moved to Texas, where she met and married Wes. Barbara and Wes's two oldest daughters were born in Texas, but her heart's desire was always to return to her hometown to raise their children. Barbara and Wes, with their two oldest daughters, returned to Hanford in 1980, where they had their youngest daughter and made their forever home.

Barbara devoted her life to creating a fun and loving environment both in her home and in her classroom. She loved spending time with her family and friends enjoying good food, listening to music, and just spending time together. Her children and grandchildren have many sweet memories of the holidays at her house and her wonderful cooking. She worked in early childhood education for over 40 years and was employed with KCAO for about 23 years, touching the lives of countless children and their families.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Wes Alewine, of Hanford; three daughters, Amber Hendry of San Luis Obispo, Alyson Scorby of Pismo Beach, and Ashlee Alewine of Pismo Beach; as well as three grandchildren, Brylee Alewine, Austin Hendry, and Calin Scorby.
