HANFORD — A man was arrested Friday after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol with his child in the car before causing a traffic accident, police said.

Hanford Police said 30-year-old Abel Magana was allegedly found to be driving under the influence of alcohol when he stopped his car in the middle of the road and caused another driver to swerve and hit a light pole.

Around 7:40 p.m. Friday, Hanford patrol officers said they were called to the area of South 11th Avenue and Tempe Drive to investigate a traffic collision with possible injuries.

Once on scene, officers said they found the driver of a GMC pickup truck that had ran into a city street light pole located on the southwest corner of 11th Avenue and Tempe Drive.

The driver told officers that he was driving his truck southbound on 11th Avenue, just north of Tempe Drive, when a Toyota Camry pulled out in front of him, causing him to swerve out of the way to avoid colliding with the Toyota, police said.

Officers said the driver of the GMC lost control and ultimately ran into the light pole.

Police said the driver of the GMC identified Magana as the driver of the Toyota. Magana was present during the time of this investigation and admitted to officers that he was driving the Toyota, which was parked on the side of the road.

A witness on scene also identified Magana as the driver of the Toyota and told officers that Magana attempted to make a westbound turn onto Tempe Drive from South 11th Avenue and had pulled out in front of the GMC and abruptly stopped on 11th Avenue, causing the driver of the GMC to swerve and crash into the light pole, police said.

Officers said Magana admitted to them that he did pull out onto southbound traffic on 11th Avenue.

While speaking to officers, Magana displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol, officials said. After performing a series of field sobriety tests, it was determined that Magana was driving while under the influence and was subsequently taken into custody.

Authorities said officers found Magana’s 1-year-old child sitting in the rear passenger seat of the Toyota. The child was not hurt and turned over to his mother at the scene.

Officials said Magana was arrested and booked into the Kings County Jail on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment.
