A 57-year-old Kingsburg man was struck by a car and killed on Monday night by a driver who fled the scene and later returned when his boss told him to cooperate with investigators.
Javier Bautista Sierra, 37, of Riverdale was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run by the California Highway Patrol.
Officers believe the victim, who is not being named until family can be notified, was walking along Mountain View Avenue, west of Van Horn Avenue, wearing all dark clothing shortly before 9 p.m.
Sierra was driving east on Mountain View in a 2008 Volvo big rig. He apparently did not see the man, the CHP said, and struck him. The impact knocked the man to the roadway, then flung his body onto the dirt shoulder.
Deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office found the man’s body shortly after and pronounced him dead from his injuries. The CHP was called in to help investigate the crash. An hour later, Sierra turned himself in, after being told by his employer to give himself up.
Sierra was found not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Investigators said it is unclear, at this time, why Sierra did not see the victim on the road in front of him.
The case remains under investigation. Officials said on Tuesday they are still attempting to contact the victim’s family.
