HANFORD – Police are currently investigating a fatal shooting that occurred right outside the central Hanford Rite Aid store on 11th Avenue and Lacey Boulevard.
A 40-year-old Hispanic man was shot several times as he left the store around 5:45 p.m. Emergency responders found him in the parking lot and rushed him to Adventist Medical Center by ambulance. Hanford police Capt. Parker Sever said he later died from his injuries.
Investigators are still on the scene sorting through eyewitness statements.
“We do not have any suspects in custody at this time,” Sever said, “but we are actively investigating the matter. We suspect it may be gang related, but it is too early to tell right now.”
The victim will not be identified until his next of kin are notified.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Richard Pontecorvo of the Hanford Police Department at 585-2540.
It was a busy night for local law enforcement. Sheriff's deputies were called out to a report of shots fired in Hanford's Home Garden neighborhood soon after the Rite Aid shooting, but Sgt. Mark Bevins said the incident was unfounded and may have stemmed from a large party in the area.
