LEMOORE – The city of Lemoore had gone five years without a homicide.
Now, Lemoore police are investigating a second homicide in just over a week within city limits.
Lemoore police Cmdr. Maggie Ochoa said that on Wednesday at about 3:26 p.m., police responded to a report that there was a man with stab wounds on the 800 block of Hanford-Armona Road.
Life-saving measures were taken but the victim died at the scene. His name and age have yet to be released.
Ochoa said the stabbing is believed to be gang-related and that the police department will be taking a pro-active approach to apprehend the possible assailant. Ochoa said the police are planning to make contact with known gang members and associates. She said police are now looking into all active leads.
Ochoa said in her 19 years on the job, she has yet to see two homicides happen so close to one another.
On May 10, Lemoore’s first homicide in five years happened in close proximity to Wednesday’s stabbing.
On the 1100 block of Hanford-Armona Road, police responded to another stabbing. They found 16-year-old Wanya Jones unresponsive in a bedroom of an apartment.
Jones was transported to Adventist Medical Center in Hanford, where he was pronounced dead.
“I know there’s some concern about it in the community,” Ochoa said. “It’s disturbing and no one wants to have this solved more than us.”
Ochoa said police believe the stabbings to be unrelated, isolated incidents.
No arrests have been made yet involving Jones’ death, Ochoa said.
Ochoa said that any community members who may have seen Wednesday’s homicide or have any other information about either incident is asked to call Lemoore police at 924-5333.
