The Corcoran High School team emerged as the overall champions at the Kings County 2010 Academic Decathlon competition Saturday at West Hills College Lemoore.
Corcoran compiled a total score of 34,025.1 points, outdistancing second place and 2009 champion Lemoore High School (33,998.5). Following in the standings were Hanford High (30,254.5), Lemoore Middle College High School (29,034.8), Hanford West High (24,938.5) and Avenal High (22,555.8).
Corcoran High salted away the overall title Saturday by capturing the final Super Quiz competition with the topic of the French Revolution. The oral examination is made up of 45 questions, with nine-member teams competing together by taking 15 of the 45 exam questions in a relay style event. John Lehn served as super quiz master.
Corcoran team members are Raymond Armbruster, Saul Garcia, Brenda Jaramillo, Marina Lefridge, Zoie Martin, Vanessa Medina, Matthew Milbrodt, Jessica Palomares, Eryc Peck, Donna Rojo, Kayla Smith, Miriam Soto, Darin Syra and Avelina Torres. The coach of the team is Mike Pankratz.
Lemoore High School sophomore Connor Denney was honored as the overall top decathlete, earning a $1,000 scholarship prize. Denney also won a $500 scholarship in the honors division; $250 for top school decathlete; and $125 scholarship prizes in the essay, language, music, mathematics and science divisions. Denney captured five of the eight competition categories, with teammate Kelli Ashby winning in speech while Frank Ohnesorgen of Lemoore Middle College High School won in interview and Corcoran's Armbruster took first place in art.
Other $500 scholarship winners for top student divisions were Armbruster in the scholastic division and Corcoran's Lefridge in the varsity division. Winning $250 scholarships as top decathletes for their schools in addition to Denney were Antony Lopez, Avenal; Miriam Soto, Corcoran; Natalie Buttle, Hanford High; Cabrilla McGinn, Hanford West High; and Danike Bullard-Jensen, Lemoore Middle College High.
Corcoran High will now represent Kings County at the 2010 California Academic Decathlon competition March 12-15 in Sacramento.
