The Naval Air Station Lemoore (NASL) MWR Gym & Fitness Center held a “Splash ‘n Dash” duathlon on Nov. 18 where competitors completed a 500-meter swim, followed by a 2.5 mile run.

In 2015, the NASL MWR Gym & Fitness Center hosted a “Fly-By-Tri” sprint triathlon, which involved a 750-meter swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run, which are the official sprint triathlon distances. In an effort to appeal to a wider audience, they decided to make this year’s event a little different.

“In the past, not everyone had a bike,” said Caitlyn Schultze, who has been the aquatics director for the past two years. “We also wanted to offer something for swimmers and the shorter distance makes it more manageable for people who are interested in participating.”

Prizes were awarded to the top male and female competitors. Ryan Noonan won top male competitor with a 10.36 swim and a total time of 29.14. Jennifer Reynolds won top female with an 8.20 swim and total time of 36.28.

For those who missed this event, the aquatics department at the gym is hoping to host the duathlon again in the spring.

The gym & fitness center has also just launched two free weekly swim classes that focus on swim technique and endurance.

“A lot of people think of the pool here as a summer activity, but we’re here all year long and the pool is heated,” said Schultze.
