The Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Liberty Center on Naval Air Station Lemoore celebrated its grand reopening on Monday evening, showcasing upgrades and new amenities for single sailors and geographic bachelors, E6 and below.

The facility boasts a new theater room, complete with leather recliners and a selection of over 400 movies at sailors’ disposal. Sailors can enjoy a game of pool, air hockey, shuffleboard, foosball or table tennis, or they can catch a football game, as the Liberty Center comes equipped with Direct TV’s NFL Sunday Ticket. The gaming area includes an Xbox 360, Play Station 3 and 4, as well as the new Atari Flashback 8 console.

“We recognized there was a need to have a place for sailors to go. There are plenty of community events already, but the sailors needed something just for them,” said MWR Director Lisa Fulton.

Plans are in the works for future gaming tournaments, such as a March Madness Bracket in 2018, according to Liberty Center Recreational Aide Chandler Grzybicki. If there is enough interest, the staff is considering hosting Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties, too.

“It’s a work in progress,” said Lindsay Carver, the manager of the Liberty Center. “We are starting slow and testing the waters, and we want feedback from the sailors.”

Plenty of seating, a small library, computers with Internet access and board games add to the leisurely atmosphere of the facility. Sailors can also bring food, but glass and alcohol are not permitted.

“We’re here and we’re doing this for the sailors. This is supposed to be their living room,” said Fulton.

Additional services available from the Liberty Center include providing travel information and finding volunteer opportunities. Day trips with transportation provided are offered on a regular basis. Upcoming trips include a day in Yosemite on Nov. 25 and attending the Los Angeles Auto Show in early December, and there are still spaces available.

According to the staff, getting the word out about the improved Liberty Center and its services is important. The Liberty Center is located south of the NEX Mainside Autoport, at 821 Hancock Circle, and shares a parking lot with the NEX Uniform Shop, NEX Home Gallery and Tailhook Lanes Bowling Center. The space was formerly shared with the Information, Tickets & Travel office, which has since been relocated to join the Outdoor Adventure Center.
