Akers School and Neutra Elementary’s Parent Teacher Clubs hosted their annual Color Run on Friday, April 6. The event was to open to everyone on base, and was run with the help of school staff and volunteers from various commands. The Color Run began four years ago as a way to promote family fitness and of course, fun.
The event was scheduled to occur on March 16 but was canceled due to inclement weather. Rain was forecast again for April 6, but to the delight of event coordinators, cool, cloudy weather prevailed instead.
Excited students and their families milled about waiting for the run to start, dancing to music and taking photos.
In previous years, participants ran a mile-long course on the grounds of Akers School. This year, a nearly two-mile course was laid out linking both schools. Over 700 participants began at their home schools and were splashed with color throughout the course before returning to their respective starting locations.
This school year was the first year that Neutra Elementary has had a Parent Teacher Club (PTC) to help run family-friendly events throughout the year.
“It was great,” said Neutra PTC president, Jennifer Vanderschaegen. “We had great participation from volunteers and teachers, and we had so much fun.”
Children were provided with sunglasses to protect their eyes, and Lincoln Military Housing was present with post-race bottled water and fruit snacks.
The next family event will take place on Friday, April 20 at 4:30 p.m. at Neutra Elementary, with their PTC hosting their first Spring Fling Festival. Those with base access can come and enjoy games, bounce houses, train rides, and food. Superior Dairy will be present rolling ice cream cones. Tickets can be purchased at the event and food is cash only.
